Membership

Please complete our online Membership Form

Membership of Burgess Hill Runners is open to anyone over the age of 13. We aim to provide a framework to guide our members towards achieving equality and equal opportunity for all involved in running regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability or age.

All new or potential new members are entitled to try the Club for up to four training sessions without any obligation to join (see First Timers section for details). After that point, if they decide to join, the regular membership fees will apply.

The annual membership fees are reviewed and decided by the committee, with membership running from the 1st April to 31st March each year in line with England Athletics. After the end of April, members who have not renewed will be regarded as having resigned and will be removed from Club records.

Current membership fees for adults are £50 for the full year, with joiners between 1st October and 31st December each year paying £35 for the part year (Joiners between 1st January and 31st March pay £50 but automatically have their membership extended to 31st March of the following year).

Walking Group membership fees are £20 for the full year, with joiners between 1st October and 31st December each year paying £15 for the part year (Joiners between 1st January and 31st March pay £20 but automatically have their membership extended to 31st March of the following year)

Juniors (under 18 years old), Students, Associates (who don’t attend any training sessions), Second Claim Members (who have affiliation to England Athletics via another club) and persons over the age of 65 also pay the reduced rate of £35 per annum.

There are no weekly subscription fees.

As a club, Burgess Hill Runners is ‘affiliated’ to England Athletics (EA) by registration and payment of an annual fee. EA is the National Governing Body in England for Athletics and running, developing and promoting Athletics across the whole of the country. Affiliation to EA incorporates affiliation to linked organisations such as English Road Running and English Cross Country and covers all athletics disciplines – road, cross country, track and field, fell and hill and race walking.

The benefits of affiliation to EA are largely determined by how deeply we wish to be involved with our England Athletics region. The basics provided are access to a regulated, fair and safe competition network; education structures for coaches and technical officials; public liability insurance cover; etc.

Our EA club registration number is 2657741 and should be quoted on all applications for EA events.

Individual members – Membership of England Athletics

Members of Burgess Hill Runners are automatically entered as individual ‘competing’ members of EA. Your annual subscription to the Club incorporates the EA fee (in 2021/22 this is £15) and is forwarded by the Club along with your personal details. From this information, EA will issue you a membership card with a Unique Race Number (URN) which entitles you to enter EA events at a reduced ‘competing’ member fee. If you have not received your card/URN and wish to enter a race, the Membership Secretary can provide you with your URN.

Runners are entitled to belong to two running or athletics clubs, selecting one as their “first claim” club.

Members who resign from one club and wish to join another club will need to follow the online “Change of First Claim Club” process set out by England Athletics. See the Change of club online process guide below.

Burgess Hill Runners is also affiliated to Sussex County Athletics Association which enables us to participate in the County’s Cross Country League.

Runners can also run races in different leagues for different clubs; e.g. WSFRL league races can be run for Club A and SGP races for Club B. But a runner is not allowed to switch their affiliation during the race series. For most athletes, belonging to just one club is sufficient.

Club members are expected to run in club colours for events. Vests and Technical T shirts are available from GR Teamwear in Church Road, Burgess Hill (see the Club Kit page).
